Adjani Okpu-Egbe - Room 313
I was born in Cameroon in 1979, and my bold, textured paintings can be seen as a kind of Afro-Expressionism. I extract from my life experiences to create my work: stories of my African childhood, personal encounters, historical research and political commentary infuse my paintings.
The work I intend to show at the fair is part of my latest body of work "The Underdogs." It is a surreal expressionist representation of influential people dead and alive who come from underprivileged backgrounds; and under certain circumstances have overcome numerous adversities and have contributed enormously to social change and contemporary social activism.
